I hate studio. For me, studio is a trap to overproduce and repeat yourself. It is a habit that leads to art pollution. (Marina Abramovic)
Art pollution, overproduction, repeating yourself, like Bach did maybe. These are the things that can make you immortal as an artist. Saying authoritative statements about does and donts with just the right amount of seductiveness to lure the people in need of security.
Mind you, Abramovic is talking about herself so she has all the right in the world to feel this fear. But we will walk away with these words and hold them as final judgments. It is seductive, in a time of profusion to talk about overproduction with just a slight undertone of knowledge about what has the right to exist and what not. It seems to make the process of deleting, of making choices on the fly, superfluous. The work simply is, at first there was nothing and now there is: creation as there ever was. A rejuvenation of the idea of divine inspiration, or maybe not divine but at least genial.
Well this can go two ways, without the reflective force of an authority on aesthetics, or nowadays ethics, we are left with an aura of charismatic power of the artist and the talent of performing in a popular way, or we are left with our own hopelessly defective discernment.
